13th Annual Quilt Show & Exhibition
July 14-15, 2017
The quaint and beautiful river town of Muncy once again is the setting for the Muncy Historical Society’s annual Quilt Show. Slated for July 14-15, visitors will have the opportunity to view antique, vintage and contemporary quilts at the Quilt Show in the Celebration Hall and Fellowship Room, at the show’s location, First United Methodist Church, 602 S. Market Street. This location features easy access and convenient and ample parking. The show runs from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, July 14 and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, July 15.
This juried show is open to all quilters! This is an opportunity for quilters to enter a quilt, or quilts, and for the non-quilter to exhibit quilts from their private collections (see registration instructions below). We anticipate more than 120 stunning antique, vintage and traditional quilts will be displayed, representing virtually all styles. Now in its thirtieth year, the event will be a showcase of spectacular hand and machine workmanship, appliqué and quilting techniques, reflecting the originality of the makers and their expertise with needle and thread, as well.
A three-person panel will judge the quilt entries and 1st, 2nd and 3rd place ribbons will be awarded in the Quilt Challenge, Appliqué, Other Techniques, Use of Color, Hand Quilting, Domestic/Hand-Guided Machine Quilting, Computer-Guided Machine Quilting, Wall Hanging, and Youth categories. The judges will award only one winner for Best of Show, selected from all first-place winners, a Best Original Design winner and a Judge’s Choice winner. Friday show attendees will nominate their personal favorite for the Viewer’s Choice award.

Edyta Sitar
California-based Edyta Sitar will be joining us on both Friday and Saturday. Edyta is an internationally-recognized quilt and fabric designer and author. Her lifelong relationship with fabrics began in Poland at a very young age, when she cut her mother’s drapes. With the help of two generations of her husband’s family, she found her confidence in this cottage craft, not only as a boundless creative outlet but also as a means to filer her passion. Soon after learning how to quilt, Sitar’s original designs started getting rave reviews from friends and quilt guild members. People wanted her to teach, and her classes started filling up. To keep up with the demand for her instructions, Sitar launched a pattern business six years under the name Laundry Basket Quilts. She started selling her patterns locally and, eventually, took them to a trade show. Now, quilt shops across the country carry her patterns. The national exposure opened the door for Sitar to design quilting fabrics.
Edyta credits inspiration, a love for fabric, a keen eye for color, and family heritage for her success in developing a thriving talent for designing quilts and quilting patterns. As one of the leading designers for Andover, Edyta’s fabric collections and patterns are widely distributed throughout the world. She is author of the best-selling books “Hop To It!,” “Friendship Strips & Scraps,” “Rainbow Nest,” “Handfuls of Scraps,” and her latest release, among others. Edyta’s quilts are amazing. She has a unique knack for combining batiks with traditional fabrics to create her designs. Her applique is beautiful, her piecing exact and her designs are fun.
On Saturday Edyta will share a bed-turning presentation based on her interpretation of antique quilts and entitled “Small Pieces, Big Dreams.” This wonderful presentation will take you back in time where we will enjoy an amazing selection of antique quilts, but it won’t stop there- a complement of beautiful scrappy quilts made by Edyta will be sure to inspire you to create. Squares, Triangles, Diamonds, and Strips; a medley of simple shapes are the building blocks of a quilting masterpiece. Join Edyta on this journey as she reviews the impact of simple shapes on scrappy quilting. Whether interested in history, a quilter or a non-quilter, this presentation will have wide appeal. There is a $10 admission fee for Edyta’s 90-minute presentation, beginning promptly at 10 a.m. in the Church’s sanctuary.
NOTE: Edyta will be conducting a workshop featuring “Anna,” an all-pieced pattern from her recently released book entitled “Little Handfuls of Scraps. The 6-hour workshop has already been filled; and a waiting list has been created in case of any attendee cancellation.
2017 Challenge Quilt Theme
The 2017 Quilt Challenge theme is “Medallion Quilts. Through a long-standing interest in both the history of quilt-making and a fascination with the English quilt tradition, our study of the medallion format emerged. Originally called a “framed” quilt, it features a central motif surrounded by a sequence of borders. The center of a classic medallion quilt is completely discretionary, with no prescribed size, or style. It may be pieced, applique, broderie perse, or perhaps a single commemorative textile. The border units may employ any number of rotations in a variety of patterns. Samples of “medallion-patterned” quilts can be found here on our website.
Always More Than a Quilt Show!
Always more than a quilt show, the show activities have been selected to appeal to all ages and young people are encouraged to attend. This event is a glorious, colorful, and educational. The Muncy Historical Society will supplement the challenge entries with a collection of privately-owned 19th century jacquard “medallion-patterned” coverlets along with vintage and contemporary artwork from private and the museum’s collection. There will several special exhibit areas this year including a display of the Society’s quilts and late 19th-early 20th century quilts from the Shires-Warburton family.
Our fourth Quilter’s Rummage Sale will be held on Saturday, July 15 from 9 a.m. to noon at its new location at the First United Methodist Church. Once again, it will feature a wide variety of material (being sold by the pound) plus books, kits, quilter tools and other quilt-related paraphernalia. Amadeus books and notecards and the Society’s historic patterns will also be available for purchase.
To Register A Quilt(s)
To exhibit a quilt(s) from your private collection you must complete a show registration form, available by calling 570-546-5917 or online by clicking this link: 2017-quilt-registration-form.
Registration forms and quilt entries must be received by the Muncy Historical Society on, or before, July 6, 7 or 8, 2017 from 9 a.m. to noon, or earlier by advance appointment. Quilts should include a cloth label with the name of the quilt, the owner’s name and address sewn to the back of the entry. A 4-4 ½” hanging sleeve should be affixed to the quilt. Quilt pick-up is scheduled for Saturday, July 16 from 4-5 p.m. or Monday, July 18 between 9 a.m. and noon at the museum.

Directions to the Quilt Show at First United Methodist Church are: I-80 to exit 212W to I-180 exit 13A, Rt. 405 to Muncy. Turn left on South Main Street, 1.0 mile, right on Mussers Lane. One block, right on S. Market Street, church is on the left. Please wear comfortable, flat-heeled shoes.
