The quaint and beautiful river town of Muncy once again is the setting for the Muncy Historical Society’s annual Quilt Show. Slated for July 13-14, visitors will have the opportunity to view antique, vintage and contemporary quilts at the Quilt Show in the Celebration Hall and Fellowship Room, at the show’s location, First United Methodist Church, 602 S. Market Street. This location features easy access and convenient and ample parking. The show runs from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, July 13 and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, July 14.

This juried show is open to all quilters! This is an opportunity for quilters to enter a quilt, or quilts, and for the non-quilter to exhibit quilts from their private collections (see registration instructions below). We anticipate more than 150 stunning antique, vintage and traditional quilts will be displayed, representing virtually all styles. Now in its fourteenth year, the event will be a showcase of spectacular hand and machine workmanship, appliqué and quilting techniques, reflecting the originality of the makers and their expertise with needle and thread, as well.

A three-person panel will judge the quilt entries and 1st, 2nd and 3rd place ribbons will be awarded in the Quilt Challenge, Appliqué, Other Techniques, Use of Color, Hand Quilting, Domestic/Hand-Guided Machine Quilting, Computer-Guided Machine Quilting, Wall Hanging, and Youth categories. The judges will award only one winner for Best of Show, selected from all first-place winners, a Best Original Design winner and a Judge’s Choice winner. Friday show attendees will nominate their personal favorite for the Viewer’s Choice award.
Our Special Guest – Paula Golden Is Coming to Muncy!
The Muncy Historical Society is delighted to host an two educational and hands-on workshops and lecture and bed-turning presentation in conjunction with our 14th Annual Quilt Show. This year’s workshops, entitled “Mastering the Mariner’s Compass” and “Feathered Star,” and presentation entitled “An Adventure in Quilt-Making” will be led by Virginia-based Paula Golden.
On Thursday, July 12 Paul will present “Mastering the Mariner’s Compass” a three-hour workshop and on Friday, she will present “Feathered Star,” a six-hour workshop in which quilters will begin to sew a feathered star quilt or the center of a beautiful medallion. On Saturday, Paula returns for a lecture/trunk show presentation based on her second quilt (which first made it to the trash can) from 1978 until her most recent quilts, complete with life lessons and quilt making lessons, learned along the way. A bit of philosophy will be included too.
Paula teaches nationally and internationally, has had patterns and quilts in a variety of publications and quilts in private and public collections. Paula teaching experiences include lectures and workshops for the International Quilt Festival in Houston, Texas, the Pennsylvania National Quilt Extravaganza in Philadelphia, the Greater Ann Arbor Quilt Guild in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and Quilters Legacy in Lakewood, Ohio, to name just a few. Paula was selected as “2001 Teacher of the Year” by The Professional Quilter Magazine, and was past-president of the Board of Directors, Virginia Quilt Museum and co-author of the book, “Quilts of Virginia: Birth of America through the Eye of a Needle. She was on the staff of Jinny Beyer’s Hilton Head Seminar since 1995. She founded Cabin Branch Quilters Woodbridge, Virginia in 1989. Paula hosted a weekly TV series on quilting for the Park Authority of Prince William, County, Virginia.
Four of her original patterns have been published in “The Foundation Piecer and Quilts With Style.” Her quilts are featured in the books “Designing Tessellations” by Jinny Beyer, “Quilts Are Forever” edited by Kathy Lamancusa, “Quilting with Manhole Covers” by Shirley MacGregor and “Celebrate the Day” by Shannon Shirley. Her quilts are also featured in the collections of the Bethesda National Naval Medical Center’s Fisher House, Walter Reed Army Medical Center, the Brehm Center for Type 1 Diabetes Research and Analysis and private individuals.

The 2018 Quilt Challenge theme is “Baskets” – quilter’s choice – laundry, flower, fruit, friendship, log cabin, hanging, picnic, shopping, mix and match, or other baskets. Imagine the possibilities!
Always More Than a Quilt Show!
Always more than a quilt show, the show activities have been selected to appeal to all ages and young people are encouraged to attend. This event is a glorious, colorful, and educational. As with every year, there will be several special exhibit areas, including vintage baskets and vintage basket-pattern quilts.
The Society’s circa 1880-1910 Cornelius Family signature basket quilt top and the reproduction signature basket quilt will be on display. The Vintage Gatherers, who meet at the Muncy Historical Society, are responsible for both the reproduction basket quilt and the World War II signature block quilt, which is also in the Society’s collection. Thanks to contributions from friends of the Society, both quilts were conceived and completed.
Paula Golden and her talented associates have agreed to extend a sampling of their “Along the Spice Trail” exhibit which features wall quilts depicting artistic interpretations of spices that refine modern cuisine. The exhibit offers an opportunity to discover the spices’ country of origin, the importance of ancient trade routes, and the lasting connections between the world’s cultural heritages.
In addition to the quilt-related vendors, there will be a number of nationally-recognized artisans displaying their hand-crafted wares.

Registration forms and quilt entries must be received by the Muncy Historical Society on, or before, July 5,6 or 7, 2018 from 9 a.m. to noon, or earlier by advance appointment. Quilts should include a cloth label with the name of the quilt, the owner’s name and address sewn to the back of the entry. A 4-4 ½” hanging sleeve should be affixed to the quilt. Quilt pick-up is scheduled for Saturday, July 14 from 4-5 p.m. or Monday, July 16 between 9 a.m. and noon at the museum.

Directions to the Quilt Show at First United Methodist Church are: I-80 to exit 212W to I-180 exit 13A, Rt. 405 to Muncy. Turn left on South Main Street, 1.0 mile, right on Mussers Lane. One block, right on S. Market Street, church is on the left. Please wear comfortable, flat-heeled shoes.
