Muncy Cup an enjoyable challenge, meaningful charity
$1,500+ in Prizes, Hole-in-One Contest Worth $10,000
and a Putting Contest Worth $5,000
The annual Muncy Cup Golf Tournament, sponsored by Muncy Historical Society and Muncy Area Kiwanis Club, begins with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. June 7 at Wynding Brook Golf Club, Milton..
Now in its 15th year, the event is a major fundraiser for the two organizations whose missions are community-minded objectives, including preserving local history and heritage and helping youth.
In return for the $80 registration fee ($160 per two-person team), golfers enjoy green fees, a cart, refreshments, lunch, a “goodie” bag, a “closest to the pin” contest, a “longest drive” contest and a “hole-in-one” contest. There are optional activities such as a skins game, a $5,000 putting contest, door prizes and a 50/50 drawing.
Proceeds from the event benefit both the Muncy Kiwanis with its youth community programming and the Muncy Historical Society in its quest to develop a Heritage Park and Nature Trail.
Located along the West Branch of the Susquehanna River, the park highlights historical Port Penn, a commercial and residential suburb of the town of Muncy that blossomed out of the West Branch Canal industry of the 1800s.
Nationally recognized for preservation projects, the historical society has incorporated its Pennsylvania Canal Packet Boat (circa 1860) into its heritage park presentations. The restored canal boat is one of many community-oriented projects that have relied upon funding through the golf tournament. For its canal boat restoration, the society received Honorable Mention Award from Pennsylvania Federation of Museums and Historical Organizations and Certificate of Commendation from the American Association of State and Local History
The society also used donations to restore the “Eight Square School,” built on the site of the oldest public school in Lycoming County, which garnered the society the prestigious Pennsylvania Preservation Initiative Award. It re-instituted the Historic Homes Tour of the Muncy area and the Antiques Show and Sale, both major fundraiser events that allow the society to preserve and conserve the area’s past.
Historical society volunteers reclaimed the Old Walton Graveyard and the Old Hill Burying Ground, rehabilitating the burial sites of the town’s founders and early pioneers. Through its Civil War Soldiers’ Monument Project, which included publication of David L. Richards’ “Priceless Treasures,” the biographies of the 71 Civil War casualties whose names are inscribed on the monument, the society redesigned the monument site to accommodate the names of an additional 64 casualties overlooked at its dedicated in 1869. This project received Honorable Mention Award from state Federation of Museums and another Certificate of Commendation from the American Association of State and Local History.
The Kiwanis Club supports programs that benefit underprivileged youth, needy families and is a supporter of community-focused projects like the Heritage Park and Nature Trail. Both all-volunteer, not-for-profit organizations encourage and support a number of educational initiatives including special exhibits, living history programs and scholarship awards for graduating seniors.
The Kiwanis have worked with the Muncy Historical Society on several projects, including the development of “The Last Raft” documentary.
Registration deadline is May 31 and is limited to amateur golfers, 18 years and older.
