Meet the Artists!

Society Slates 18th Annual Art Show & Sale

The 18th annual invitational Artists Exhibition and Sale will be held Nov. 10, from 5:30 to 9 p.m., with opening night refreshments, and Nov. 11, from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. The show will be held at the First United Methodist Church, 602 S. Market Street, Muncy.

The Society’s art show committee wants to ensure that show guests experience a well-rounded event that includes a wide range of artistic expression–diversity and excellent artistry remain paramount to the selection process. The show will feature some of the most talented artists in Pennsylvania whose works are exhibited and collected nationally; many share a close relationship with Lycoming County and the surrounding area. It includes a wide range of artistry, including oil, acrylic, pastels, and watercolor paintings, jewelry, ceramics, metal- and woodworking, mixed media, textiles, and home décor. The show will be a rich and varied collection of original works along with signed and numbered limited-edition reproductions.

This year’s artists include Melanie Payton, Kris Robbins, Mark Robbins, Tammy Rosenow, Roger Shipley, Theresa Spitler, Bruce Storm, Nella Godbey Storm, and Wynn Yarrow. Brian Druckenmiller, Jule Hanford, and Margaret Snow will be joining the show for the first time.

“We are so proud to be in our 18th year and are so thankful for the volunteers who help to make this show possible. For us, it is an opportunity to meet new artists and to reacquaint ourselves with those who are returning. And, most importantly, the community gets to see a wide variety of artistry, to meet the artists, and to see the works of incredibly talented artists” explains Linda Poulton, show coordinator.

Attendees will have an opportunity to participate in a silent auction on Friday, and until 1 pm on Saturday. Attendees may also register for a free drawing for a $100 gift certificate toward a purchase at the 2024 Artist Show.

This year’s show proceeds will benefit the Muncy Historical Society’s educational initiatives and its community outreach, including the “Pops at Pepper Street” concert and the development of the Captain John Brady Heritage Park located at the north end of Market Street, in Muncy.

Arts funding support has been provided by Gary’s Furniture, 3 Factory Street, Picture Rocks; state funding through a grant from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, an agency funded by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and friends of the Muncy Historical Society.

Theresa Spitler

Theresa Crowley Spitler works in pastel to create her paintings and explore color form and texture. Her subject matter includes landscapes, seascapes, and still life. Her still life paintings depict everyday objects and she often receives requests from her patrons to include their personal mementos in a still life arrangement that will become an original painting. She enjoys painting landscapes that convey mood and atmosphere, which is evident in her creation of skies and clouds.

“I love working with pastels because they are pure pigment and have a brilliant intensity. I apply many layers to give my paintings a deep rich appearance. Pastels can be handled boldly or with a subtle touch. I strive to create something beautiful or thought-provoking that connects with the viewer”

Wynn Yarrow

Wynn Yarrow, a teaching artist for The Rockwell Museum, Corning, NY, is known for richly detailed landscapes in painting and collage. In her own words, “Through the language of evocative color, I speak of many places, invoking the spirit of wonder. Sketches, memory, and imagination join to create quiet, intricate worlds; worlds that beckon you to slow your pace and enter the mystery.”

Forest Moth & Night Magic are mixed media: Golden Meadow, The Dreaming, I Wish I May & Amongst Trees are acrylic gouache.
Recently Wynn has turned her eye for color and love of pattern to the world of textiles. Her great grandparents came from Sweden to New England as weavers. This family history and a love of the Arts and Crafts movement led her to design textiles for the Jacquard loom. Nature themes have always been foremost in her art.

Coverlets designed by Wynn Yarrow are woven on a Jacquard loom in the U.S.A. They are a cozy 50” x 60” size (throw blanket) perfect for chilly evenings. The six colors of cotton combine to create a wider variety of muted colors. The design can be seen on the reverse, with different colors. Machine wash on gentle and dry on low.

Mark Robbins

Mark Robbins would sneak into his father’s woodworking shop where he turned baseball bats for neighborhood ball games. Later in a high school class, Mark turned his first bowl and was fascinated by the process. Since 1996 Mark has returned to woodturning and displays his art at various shows and galleries.

As a master wood artisan, Mark strives “to find what nature has hidden in the wood.” His focus is to create organic “life” forms with seamless, flowing lines, contrasted with texture and carved elements. Each piece has its own character and uniqueness.

Bruce Storm

Bruce Storm continues to take inspiration from the Muncy area and this year’s collection is no different. We are excited to share his comments highlighting this year’s art.

“Muncy has an inordinate number of its’ original outbuildings, barns, and sheds remaining today. In addition, they are located along a gridwork of alleyways and cross streets situated at the back end of many of these properties. And most have stop signs nearby! This series of eight (8) paintings is titled: from the series – A Stop in Muncy 2021.”

When creating his works, Bruce begins composing paintings through his laborious process of writing ideas that will be followed by en plein air sketching and, lastly, hours of painting in layers, typically seven transparent applications in a given spot. His paintings represent his philosophy hidden beneath the humor of those whimsical interpretations of his environment.
