Muncy Historical Society received a grant from the Waldron Memorial Fund, of the First Community Foundation Partnership of Pennsylvania. William Poulton, president and executive director of the Historical Society, represented the community-focused organization at the First Community Foundation award ceremony.
The $8,000 award will enable the society to offset its annual general operating expenses, including costs to maintain, secure, and sustain the society’s properties, to pay utility costs, and to ensure each location and its “pieces of Muncy’s past.” The society’s umbrella includes the Muncy Historical Museum, the Muncy Heritage Park and Nature Trail, the Eight-Square School in Moreland Township, and a new project: Fort Brady Heritage Park.
Fortunately, as an all-volunteer organization, the historical society does not need to budget for staff salaries. Memberships, museum store sales, research fees, and private donations also are applied toward the annual operating costs.
The proceeds from its annual fundraising events – golf tournament, quilt show, and artists’ exhibition and sale – help underwrite the society’s community-oriented and educational initiatives.
Although concerned with the rainfall totals prior to the POPS Williamsport Symphony concert, the August 4 event was an evening filled with incredible music, popcorn, and fireworks.
Remaining on its 2018 calendar is the annual Artists Exhibition and Sale, to be held at the First United Methodist Church, 602 S. Market Street, in Muncy, a new location. The dates are Nov. 9 – 10.
Also, during the next few months, society volunteers will be actively involved with Muncy’s Local History class, both in the classroom and on specially-designed field trips.
