Muncy Cup an enjoyable challenge, meaningful charity event$1,300+ in Prizes, Hole-in-One Contest Worth $10,000 and a Putting Contest Worth $5,000

MUNCY – The annual Muncy Cup Golf Tournament, sponsored by Muncy Historical Society, begins with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. June 13 at Wynding Brook Golf Club, Milton.

Now in its 16th year, the event is a major fundraiser for the Historical Society’s community outreach objectives, including its quest to develop a Heritage Park and Nature Trail. Located along the West Branch of the Susquehanna River, the park highlights historical Port Penn, a commercial and residential suburb of the town of Muncy that blossomed out of the West Branch Canal industry of the 1800s.

The all-volunteer, not-for-profit organization encourages and supports a number of educational initiatives including special exhibits and living history programs. In 2014, the society hosted the “Passage to Freedom: Secrets of the Underground Railroad” Traveling Exhibit and this year will sponsor a month-long “World War II and the Home Front Exhibit” in September. This exhibit, with a local focus, will explore how World War II transformed our communities and mobilized Americans to ensure victory.

In return for the $90 registration fee ($180 per two-person team), golfers enjoy green fees, a cart, refreshments, lunch, a “goodie” bag, a “closest to the pin” contest, a “longest drive” contest and a “hole-in-one” contest. There are optional activities such as a skins game, a $5,000 putting contest, door prizes and a 50/50 drawing.

Nationally recognized for preservation projects, the historical society has incorporated its Pennsylvania Canal Packet Boat (circa 1860) into its heritage park presentations. The restored canal boat is one of many community-oriented projects that have relied upon funding through the golf tournament. For its canal boat restoration, the society received Honorable Mention Award from Pennsylvania Federation of Museums and Historical Organizations and Certificate of Commendation from the American Association of State and Local History

The society also used donations to restore the “Eight Square School,” built on the site of the oldest public school in Lycoming County, which garnered the society the prestigious Pennsylvania Preservation Initiative Award.

Historical society volunteers reclaimed the Old Walton Graveyard and the Old Hill Burying Ground, rehabilitating the burial sites of the town’s founders and early pioneers.

Registration deadline is June 5 and is limited to amateur golfers, 18 years and older.
