MUNCY – The annual Muncy Cup Golf Tournament, sponsored by Muncy Historical Society begins with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. June 11 at Wynding Brook Golf Club, Milton.
Now in its 17th year, the event is a major fundraiser for Muncy Historical Society’s community outreach objectives, including its quest to develop a Heritage Park and Nature Trail. Located along the West Branch of the Susquehanna River, the park highlights historical Port Penn, a commercial and residential suburb of the town of Muncy that blossomed out of the West Branch Canal industry of the 1800s.
In return for the $80 registration fee ($160 per two-person team), golfers enjoy green fees, a cart, refreshments, lunch, a “goodie” bag, and on-course men’s and women’s “closest to the pin,” “longest drive” and a “hole-in-one” contest. There are optional activities such as a skins game, a $5,000 putting contest, door prizes and a 50/50 drawing. Registration deadline is June 5 and is limited to amateur golfers, 18 years and older.
This all-volunteer, not-for-profit organization encourages and supports a number of educational initiatives including special exhibits and living history programs.
In 2015 the society hosted the “World War II and the Home Front Exhibit and this year will sponsor a month-long “The Legacy of Opportunity: The Roots and Routes of Immigration” in September. This exhibit, with a local focus, will explore the who, why, where and how immigrants came to America, settling in Pennsylvania and making their way to the northcentral part of the state.
Nationally recognized for preservation projects, the historical society has incorporated its Pennsylvania Canal Packet Boat (circa 1860) into its heritage park presentations. The restored canal boat and the development of the Muncy Heritage Park and Nature Trail are just two of many community-oriented projects that have relied upon funding through the golf tournament.
The society also used donations to restore the “Eight Square School,” built on the site of the oldest public school in Lycoming County and to redesign the base of Muncy’s Civil War Monument to include the names of an additional 120 men who lost their lives during that terrible conflict. Historical society volunteers reclaimed the Old Walton Graveyard and the Old Hill Burying Ground, rehabilitating the burial sites of the town’s founders and early pioneers.
