The Wynding Brook Golf Club was an ideal setting for this year’s co-sponsored 2014 Muncy Cup golf event. Muncy’s Historical Society and Kiwanis Club partnered for the annual outing that helps both organizations achieve community-minded objectives: preserving local history and heritage for future generations and helping the young people of the community.
The first-place, two-person team of Dale Appleman and Dave Boudman received Muncy Cup trophies and flags. Second-place winners were Dick Day and Randy Wolfe and third place went to Jay Reed and Stacey Roarty. Jim Bergey and Dondi Hockenbrock placed fourth; Tom Penfield and Jim Vanderin took fifth; and Cody and Matthew Rogers’ score gave them sixth place. The first- through sixth-place teams received cash awards $500 to $50 per team.
Jay Reed and Bob Barley won the closest-to-pin contests on holes 16 and 6 respectively; Ernie Naugle was the winner of both men’s longest drive and closest to the line contests; and Lori Fisher was this year’s ladies longest drive and closest-to-the-line contests champion. After lunch, the eligible contest winners attempted to hole a 60-foot putt in the standalone putting contest. Lori Fisher’s putt came up just short from winning the $5,000 contest.
Proceeds from the event benefit both the Muncy Area Kiwanis Club, and the Historical Society, aiding in its quest to develop a Heritage Park and Nature Trail, a multi-year plan that is transforming an 11-acre section of Port Penn into a walking trail and hands-on history lesson.
Located along the West Branch of the Susquehanna River, the park is in an historical and environmentally significant region. The park highlights Port Penn, a present-day commercial center and residential area that grew out of, and around, the bustling West Branch Canal industry of the 1800s. This year’s efforts include a boat-building facility, which will house a recently salvaged cargo boat removed by volunteers from the National Canal Museum in Easton.
The Kiwanis Club supports programs that benefit underprivileged youth, needy families and is a supporter of community-focused projects like the Heritage Park and Nature Trail. Both all-volunteer, not-for-profit organizations encourage and support a number of educational initiatives including special exhibits, living history programs, and scholarship awards for graduating seniors.
