Muncy Historical Society will host both a dedication ceremony and a “Wagging Tails and War Tales” presentation at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 11, the at the society’s Heritage Park and Nature Trail location, 601 Pepper Street, Muncy.
The dedication portion of the event will recognize the Lumber Heritage Region, which selected the Muncy Historical Society’s Heritage Park and Nature Trail as a recipient of a mini-grant for the design and installation of seven additional interpretive panels at the park. This project was financed in part by a grant from the Community Conservation Partnerships Program (C2P2), Environmental Stewardship Fund, under the administration of the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Bureau of Recreation and Conservation, along with matching dollars from friends of the Historical Society. Immediately after, members and friends of the Central Susquehanna Woodland Owners Association will honor Jack Murray’s legacy as a forest steward and explorer with the dedication of a bench placed in his memory.
At the education pavilion, Bill Poulton will present the “Wagging Tales” portion, the last in the society’s series of its World War II 2015 learning focus. This will be an opportunity to learn how American family dogs contributed in the defense effort during World War II. Their impressive record of service will be highlighted to demonstrate the intimacy and bonding with humans and to acknowledge these unsung heroes who served our country, often at the expense of their own lives. While not confirmed, local K-9 units are tentatively scheduled to be on hand to demonstrate how canines continue to serve in a number of vital roles.
This is a free, all-outside event so dress appropriately. Arrive early so that you can grab a complimentary hot dog and beverage and to view the interpretive signage, while enjoying the natural beauty of the park. In case of inclement weather, the dedication portion will be held but the “Wagging Tales” presentation will be rescheduled. Contact (570) 564-5917 for an update when weather is a consideration.
